The Woodsy is a digital newsletter of PNW topics, insights and enthusiasm, which can be enjoyed rain or shine, decaf or regular.

We believe in:

  • Celebrating our PNW roots and culture
  • The intelligence and savviness of our readers and community
  • Staying informed and motivated as citizens
  • The importance of connection, community, and belonging
  • Owning our personality, voice, vulnerabilities, and passions
  • Supporting other women, a la Ann Friedman’s “Shine Theory
  • Transparency and integrity.
  • Maintaining and respecting your privacy (see our Privacy Policy).

In other words, we want The Woodsy to be known for insightful, engaging and entertaining content with regional themes, and for presenting material that PNW women can connect with, learn from, and relate to.

Welcome to The Woodsy.

And, perhaps it should go without saying, but we actually don’t think it can be said enough: here at The Woodsy, we welcome everyone, especially people of color, people of different religions, and people from marginalized populations. If you want to be here, we’re glad you’re here.

Dena Ogden, Co-Founder

Dena is a native Washingtonian who freely embraces many Northwest stereotypes, including a love of both coffee and scarves, an appreciation of wine, and an aversion to umbrellas. A first-generation college student and proud UW grad (GO HUSKIES), she has a degree in Communication & English that she uses everyday as a freelance writer. She has written about parenting and pop culture for Bustle and Romper, brunch and boybands for Extra Crispy, her own parenting experiences for Mommy Nearest, technology and family life for Techwalla, and the Spokane region for Mapquest’s Parachute platform.

She and her husband currently call Eastern Washington home. They have one delightful son, one shaggy dog, and completely opposite taste in movies and music. She brought The Woodsy to life to give her fellow PNW women a positive, productive home on the web where they can embrace their rain-soaked roots. When she’s not online, she can usually be found trying to get someone in her household to snuggle with her under a blanket, enjoying French fries, and wishing for cloudy weather, often all at the same time.

Julia grew up south of Seattle, where her parents instilled a love of all things Pacific Northwest in her little nerdy soul by taking their family (and her notebook and camera) everywhere from the Seattle Shakespeare Company to the Pacific Science Center to the Washington Park Arboretum to the occasional mountain. After graduating with a B.A. in English Literature from Seattle University, Julia’s love for the Pacific Northwest has kept her roots securely tied to the area. She has written a guidebook about her university, opinion articles for the Seattle Times NEXT program, and worked in commercial real estate and content marketing before taking a brief sabbatical to start a family. Currently, she has her own illustration company, Rather Puckish, and works as a content strategist for companies around the Puget Sound.

It took under five minutes for Julia to fall in love with the idea of The Woodsy when Dena mentioned she had a plan to bring her love of the PNW to the internet someday. A few looooong emails, several cups of coffee, and a few cross-state road trips later, the rest, as they say, is history. In her off hours, she can be found scribbling, sketching, reading, running, swinging, fencing, or doing some other “ing” she had only just thought to try.
