You knew this one was coming. Based on the frequent mentions and copious amounts of praise we’re often bestowing on coffee, it was only a matter of time before we gave the drink its well-deserved moment in the spotlight. Actually, it doesn’t seem to do our favorite morning drink justice to call it a “drink”. Perhaps we meant to say “magic potion” or “sweet, sweet nectar of the gods,” or “drink that is merely one step below oxygen on our own personal hierarchies of needs.”
On a personal note, I didn’t really start on coffee until attending college in Seattle, and I’m sure those two things are related. Caramel macchiatos were my gateway drink, and I still remember when they were $2.75 at my favorite Tully’s, on The Ave, just off UW’s campus. And, I can admit that, even now, I’m not hardcore enough to drink it black, but I can get by with limited amounts of cream and sugar, which is a far cry from the liquid candy I originally started with.
I now consider coffee a highlight of my morning routine, a daily treat that brings comfort and normalcy, no matter what other circumstances I’m in. To find myself in a region with so many coffee shops, so many opportunities to share it with friends, and so many ways to find, drink, and enjoy it, is one of the zillion reasons this area is a fit for me. Perhaps you can see why we had to name coffee as one of our favorite things about the PNW. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go refill my mug. -Dena
